Okay. Yeah. I guess you're right, Matthew.

As much as I would like simple emoticons to properly express the way I feel towards certain online situations or arguments, it would be better not to take that shortcut. Using words to explain why I find find a reply face-palm worthy, or expressing why a concept is eye-roll worthy rather than rolling my eyes at the poster, is probably going to be more productive in the long run.

But I'm a lazy creature, and I like my shorthand. Disdain is easy. Open communication is hard.

Grrr.

The downside is that people could just be more open about their disdain.

::eye roll::

At least an emoticon would be slightly more friendlier....

Not to mention that people often attach pics (of facepalms) so including an emoticon would reduce the usage of attached pics.

Which rather neatly illustrates the lack of need for an eyeroll emoticon. Oh and what about

That has a certain eyeroll like quality to it.

See...to me that's a Raven "You don't need that item, right?" look. ;-)

Yes. It would be better if the Face Palm was of a cute animal! (There are some great ones of polar bears and red pandas doing facepalms!).

I love red pandas.

I'm pretty much a sucker for all types of Pandas. SO CUTE!! :)

That one seems a bit more hostile than your average Panda. ;)

Dunno. I'm afraid to touch it or a panda might come after me.

Whether the emoticon is there or not... People will choose to act with decency and consideration for each other - - - or not so choose, each according to his or her own personal conscience and/or ethical beliefs.

(In short people will be nice or mean regardless)

Having an emoticon may enable a few more condescensions - but you will probably see a more honest expression of people's thoughts...

Is that good or bad for the overall health of the forums?

I'm mostly indifferent but with a slight lean ::sigh:: for less enablement...

They say that the best weapon is the one you never have to use. I respectfully disagree. I prefer the weapon you only have to use once! Oh - and if you really need to think about whether you're going to use the fireball or the + umpty staff of butt-whooping - you're likely to find yourself full of arrows, or fangs, or nasty knives & swords and such. Don't think - just shoot!
