I agree that it seems like we're (again, like with the Dragon) *too* prepared... and have too many tokens to deal with the issues. Personally, I would have LOVED to show up for TD and be told "yeah, this room's underwater, punk... deal with it."

Suprise and challenge are one thing, sitting around bored not having fun is another. If I turned up and was told I couldn't cast spells or sing I would be upset as that's mostly what I do. It might be ok for 1 room but several would get old real fast and I'd wonder why I bothered paying for the run.

This is not unlike "challenging" players with Anti-magic fields in DnD 3.0. Yep it worked, they got to use none of their things and it was a slog fest, but ultimately its dull and boring and makes you wonder why you play. Good challenge is letting the players do their thing but making a different way more effective so they are encouraged to figure something out or think on their feet. Having a token to solve the problem isn't a bad way to handle it because it still requires a trade-off in most cases.

And ofcorse with all things, if a token or ability makes an encounter too easy you could always opt to not use it
Sweet a combat room, we won't take damage!
