I recently ran into an old blog from a black man from San Francisco who went to Japan to help teach English. It was hilarious and provided really amazing insights that I'm sure you could easily relate to. He spent a lot of time talking about the fact that he and every other white or black foreigner in Japan had Gaijin superpowers. One of which was a forcefield where no matter how crowded a train was, no japanese person would sit next to him. There were all sorts of other bits including more than any sane person would ever want to know about Kancho.

Henwy,

I teach JHS. Please don't mention the kanchou.

Yes, the forcefield really does work. I've been here for 12 years. I know it has been too long because the following has started to happen:

1. I have almost forgotten how to tie shoelaces.
2. I find myself bowing on the phone.
3. I enjoy corn soup with my Big Mac.
4. I don't worry about speeding in the rain because the police are only out when it is good weather.
5. (married now but before) After spending the night with a complete stranger waking up to find your apartment clean (yes, even the eggholder in the fridge) and never seeing that person again.
6. I think a wet umbrella need condoms (that needs explaining)
7. I think the natural place for a beer garden is on the roof.
8. I have run out of snappy comebacks for compliments on my chopstick skills.
9. Finding myself in the middle of nowhere in the countryside, rice fields all around, and finding a vending machine that works with no apparent outlet.
10. I think one kind of white rice tastes better than another.

Oh, here is another comic for you. It is called Charisma man.

Ha! He mentioned #5 in the blog which I just thought was the greatest thing in the world. Where else do you have women who after a one night stand will clean your apartment before leaving? Hell, I imagine most people are just happy if they don't wake up to find valuables missing. I'm pretty sure American women wouldn't stand for this sort of thing though.

Does anyone want a full block of 10 tickets to Giant's Travail at 3:48 pm on thursday? I have already bought them, but I can sell them to you directly when they arrive.

-- the ability to imagine.
